When your child flies across oceans, your heart stays right where they were born.

To the Desi Soul in New York - From SEVEE

For the ones who left home, and the ones who stayed behind.

She was just 17 when I dropped her to New York, a city full of lights — and unknowns. We bonded like never before in those final few days. Then she flew. And I stayed. She was ready to leave the nest, but I wasn’t ready to let go.

I still remember her first day of kindergarten. She had separation anxiety. She cried. I waited — relieved, if I’m honest — that she was finally adjusting. Seventeen years later, she walked into college, and this time, I was the one with separation anxiety. I cried. I waited — trying to trust the process. But truthfully, it ached.

This letter is for every parent who left behind a jaan ka tukda, and every young adult trying to be strong while secretly craving home.

Because moving to America isn't just about changing countries. Sometimes, you are learning to build a life while carrying another one inside you — the life you came from.

Maybe you are the young adult who left India for college, work, marriage, or a new beginning. Maybe you're in New York, California, Texas, New Jersey, or somewhere in between. Maybe you're doing well on paper, but still feel lonely on a Sunday evening. Maybe you're caught between two cultures, two expectations, two versions of yourself.

Or maybe you're the parent back home, watching your child become independent from thousands of miles away. Feeling proud. Missing them. Worrying about them. And sometimes wondering when being a good parent started to mean learning how to let go.

I've lived in America too. I studied at UCI, lived in California, raised my children there, danced at Garba nights in Fremont, and have also lived in Austin, Texas. I've experienced the everyday life of being Indian in America — the celebrations, the friendships, the independence, the cultural in-betweenness, and those quieter moments when you suddenly realise how far away home feels.

I know what it can feel like to be Desi at heart, American by circumstance, and emotionally somewhere in between.

Maybe you're not falling apart. Maybe you're simply tired of holding everything together.

At SEVEE, we offer online counseling and therapy for Indians across the USA — in Hindi, Gujarati and English. But understanding your language is only one part of understanding you. We understand the cultural expectations, the ghar ki yaad, the pressure to succeed, the guilt that can come with privilege, and the expectations around family, marriage, children and career. We understand the feeling of being “too Indian” in one room and “not Indian enough” in another, and the things you may not know how to explain to someone who has never lived between cultures.

Our therapists are from India bring an understanding of the cultural context you grew up with, while meeting you where you are today. Whether you're in New York or California, Texas or New Jersey, or anywhere else across the United States, you don't have to explain your entire world before someone can understand what you're trying to say.

And this isn't only for the person who moved abroad. We also hold space for parents and families back home who are learning to navigate distance, changing relationships, independence, pride, worry and the ache of missing someone you love.

Because sometimes therapy isn't about fixing what is broken. Sometimes it is about finally having somewhere safe to put everything you've been carrying — a bridge between two homes, two cultures, two generations, two hearts.

You made it here. You built a life. But somewhere along the way, perhaps you lost pieces of yourself. SEVEE is here to help you find the words for those pieces — and make sense of where you are now.

Because even if you left the mitti behind, you still carry the soul of Desh. And SEVEE was built to hold that with you.
