What is Sibling Counselling? How Does It Work at SEVEE CARE?
Sibling Counselling — Because Being Family Doesn't Always Mean Feeling Understood
Sometimes siblings grow up in the same home, share the same memories, and still experience the family completely differently.
Sibling relationships can be some of the longest relationships we have — but that does not automatically make them easy.
Siblings may love each other deeply and still struggle with comparison, competition, resentment, misunderstandings, old wounds, differences in personality, unequal expectations, or unresolved experiences from childhood.
Sometimes the conflict is about something happening today.
And sometimes, today's argument is carrying years of yesterday.
For many Indian and South Asian families, sibling relationships can also become intertwined with expectations around responsibility, family roles, finances, ageing parents, marriage, inheritance, caregiving, and the idea that siblings should always remain close simply because they are family.
But being siblings does not mean you will always see things the same way.
At SEVEE CARE, Sibling Counselling provides a safe space for siblings to understand what is happening between them, communicate more openly, work through unresolved conflict, and explore what a healthier sibling relationship could look like.
The goal is not to decide who is right.
It is to understand the relationship — and what each person can do differently within it.

Sibling Counselling is not about forcing siblings to become close.
The process may include:

Joint sibling sessions
-
Individual sessions when therapeutically appropriate

-
Understanding recurring conflict patterns

Identifying triggers and emotional responses

Exploring childhood experiences and perceptions

Learning healthier ways to disagree

Two siblings can remember the same childhood very differently.
One may remember being protected.
The other may remember being controlled.
One may feel they were given more responsibility.
The other may feel they were given less attention.
Neither person's experience needs to be dismissed for the other person's experience to be understood.
Therapy creates space for both perspectives.
When Childhood Conflicts Follow You Into Adulthood
Sometimes siblings stop fighting about the original issue but continue reacting to each other as though they are still children.
A small comment may trigger an old feeling.
A disagreement about parents may suddenly become a competition over who has done more.
A conversation about money may become a conversation about who was valued more.
A decision about caregiving may bring back years of resentment.
These patterns can become so familiar that siblings may not even realise they are repeating them.
Sibling Counselling can help identify these patterns and create space between the old story and the present relationship.
The goal is not to erase the past.
It is to stop the past from controlling every interaction in the present.
Sibling Counselling for Adult Siblings
Sibling relationships often change significantly when people become adults.
Marriage, children, careers, relocation, financial independence, ageing parents, and different lifestyles can create new expectations between siblings.
You may find yourself asking:
-
“Why am I always expected to take responsibility?”
-
“Why does everyone expect me to adjust?”
-
“Why does my sibling get treated differently?”
-
“Why does my sibling think I don't care?”
-
“Why are we fighting about our parents?”
-
“Why can't we talk without bringing up the past?”
-
“Why have we become strangers?”
Adult sibling counselling can help create a relationship that is based less on old family roles and more on the people you have become.
Sibling Relationships Across Countries
For Indian and South Asian families living across different countries, physical distance can add another layer to sibling relationships.
One sibling may remain in India while another moves abroad.
One may become more involved in caring for parents.
Another may contribute financially.
One may feel they are carrying the emotional responsibility.
Another may feel their contribution is not recognised.
Distance can make these differences harder to discuss.
Sibling Counselling can provide a space to explore these expectations without turning the conversation into a competition about who has done more.
What If One Sibling Is More Rigid or Doesn't Want to Understand?
Not every sibling enters counselling with the same level of openness.
One sibling may genuinely want to repair the relationship while the other may feel:
“I don't have a problem. They are the problem.”
Sometimes a sibling may be strongly fixed in their understanding of what happened and may only want to be understood without being willing to understand the other person.
Therapy cannot force someone to become flexible.
At SEVEE CARE, we work with the possibility for change that is available.
If one sibling has a strong block, we may begin by working with the sibling who is more willing to reflect, understand their own patterns, communicate differently, or explore what is within their control.
This is not about taking sides.
It is about starting where there is an opening.
Sometimes one person's change can alter the pattern between two people.
Will Sibling Counselling Actually Work?
It can, but it may take time.
Sibling relationships often carry years of history. People may need to unlearn old roles, assumptions, comparisons, and ways of communicating before they can learn something different.
How much change is possible depends on the personalities of the siblings, their willingness to participate, the level of conflict, emotional readiness, and whether there is some capacity for self-reflection.
The goal is not necessarily to make siblings become best friends.
Sometimes the healthier outcome is being able to communicate without constant conflict.
Sometimes it is rebuilding closeness.
Sometimes it is learning to maintain a respectful relationship with healthier boundaries.
And sometimes, therapy helps one person accept what they cannot change about the other while deciding how they want to participate in the relationship going forward.
The goal is not always closeness. The goal is a healthier relationship.
Therapy Approaches That May Be Used
Depending on the siblings' concerns and therapeutic needs, therapists may integrate:
-
Family Systems Therapy approaches
-
Emotion-Focused approaches
-
Person-Centered Therapy
-
CBT-informed techniques
-
Attachment-informed understanding
-
Communication and conflict-resolution techniques
-
Behavioural approaches
-
Emotional regulation strategies
-
Boundary-setting approaches
-
Parent and family psychoeducation where relevant
-
Mindfulness and grounding techniques
The approach is adapted according to the age of the siblings, relationship history, concerns, and therapeutic goals.
FAQs – Sibling Counselling
What is Sibling Counselling?
Sibling Counselling is a therapeutic process that helps brothers and sisters understand relationship patterns, communicate more effectively, work through conflict, and develop healthier ways of relating to one another.
Is Sibling Counselling only for siblings who are fighting?
No. Siblings may seek counselling because they are fighting, emotionally distant, struggling with unresolved childhood experiences, or simply finding it difficult to maintain their relationship as adults.
Can adult siblings come for counselling?
Yes. Sibling Counselling can support both younger siblings and adult brothers and sisters. In fact, many sibling conflicts become more complicated in adulthood because of marriage, careers, finances, caregiving, parenting, and ageing parents.
Do both siblings have to attend?
Ideally, both siblings participate when the goal is to work directly on the relationship. However, if one sibling is unwilling or unable to participate, counselling can still work with the sibling who is willing to explore their own responses, boundaries, and choices within the relationship.
What if my sibling says they don't have a problem?
That can happen.
Therapy cannot force someone to participate or change.
In such situations, we focus on the person who is willing to engage and explore what is within their control. Sometimes changing one person's responses can change the pattern of the relationship.
Will the counsellor take one sibling's side?
No. The purpose is not to determine who is the “good sibling” or the “bad sibling.”
The counsellor works towards understanding each person's experience while helping identify patterns that may be contributing to the conflict.
Can counselling help with childhood resentment?
Yes. Childhood experiences can continue to influence adult sibling relationships. Counselling can provide space to explore feelings around comparison, favouritism, responsibility, neglect, competition, or other experiences while understanding how they affect the relationship today.
Can sibling counselling help when siblings don't speak to each other?
It may help create a structured and emotionally safer space to understand what led to the distance and explore whether communication or reconnection is possible.
However, counselling cannot guarantee reconciliation. Each person's willingness and boundaries matter.
Can sibling counselling help with conflicts about ageing parents?
Yes. Adult siblings can experience significant conflict around caregiving, financial contributions, decision-making, living arrangements, and responsibility for ageing parents.
Counselling can help siblings communicate about these issues without allowing every discussion to become a replay of old family conflicts.
Can siblings living in different countries attend together?
Yes. SEVEE CARE provides online counselling, which can make it possible for siblings living in different cities or countries to participate in the same counselling process, subject to scheduling and the suitability of online therapy.
Will one membership cover all the siblings?
Yes. A Family or Sibling Counselling membership is linked to one account/email ID, but the sessions within that membership can involve the siblings participating in the counselling process.
Depending on the therapeutic need, the counsellor may work with both siblings together or with individual siblings as part of the overall counselling process.
You do not need to purchase a separate membership for every sibling participating in the same counselling process.
Does Sibling Counselling mean we have to become close again?
No.
The purpose of counselling is not to force closeness.
Sometimes siblings want to rebuild a close relationship. Sometimes they want to communicate without fighting. Sometimes they need healthier boundaries. And sometimes they need to understand and accept that the relationship may need to look different from what they imagined.
There is no single definition of a healthy sibling relationship.
At SEVEE CARE, we help you explore what a healthier relationship can realistically look like for you.
Do SEVEE CARE counsellors understand Indian and South Asian sibling dynamics?
SEVEE CARE works with Indian and South Asian individuals and families, including those living abroad.
Sibling relationships can be influenced by cultural expectations around family responsibility, comparison, parental expectations, marriage, caregiving, financial responsibility, and maintaining family unity.
These cultural layers can be explored within counselling without assuming that every family should follow the same definition of what siblings “should” be.
You may share the same childhood, but you don't have to carry the same story.
Sibling Counselling at SEVEE CARE creates a space to understand those different stories — and decide what you want your relationship to look like from here.
